    Obiettivi formativi

    Prerequisiti

Fisica classica: termodinamica, meccanica e elettromagnetismo.

    Metodologie didattiche

    Textbook and course materials

    F. Reif, Fundamentals of Statistical and Thermal Physics (McGraw-Hill); R.K. Pathria, Statistical Mechanics (Pergamon Press)

    Course objectives

The course aims to provide basic knowledge of a statistical approach to the physics problems. The student will also develop the ability to understand the different statistical ensembles, with their physical applications to gases and condensed matter.
The course, therefore, is aimed at a training for the student to apply the acquired knowledge to the description of simple mechanical and thermodynamic systems using statistical methods.
In relation to communication skills, the course aims to develop the student's ability to clearly and rigorously present the basic concepts and laws of Statistical Mechanics.

    Prerequisites

Classical Physics: Thermodynamics, mechanics and electromagnetism.

    Teaching methods

The course is composed of 42 hours of lectures (6 for fundamentals of thermodynamics, 4 for random walks, 6 for the principles of statistical mechanics, 22 for statistical ensembles and 4 for quantum statistics) and 12 hours of exercises, all done in the classroom.
Attendance is not mandatory, but strongly suggested.

    Evaluation methods

The exam is an oral test which consists of the discussion and discussion of the topics of the program carried out in class and lasts about 30 minutes. In addition to verifying the level of knowledge reached by the student, the oral exam aims to ascertain the student's familiarity with a statistical approach to the description of thermodynamic and mechanical phenomena.
