    Course objectives

    The course of Technical Physics is aimed at providing students with the basic knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer together with their technical applications in the real world. At the end of the course the students should be able to understand the topics of the course and apply the knowledge in order to analyze the energy performance of buildings as well as heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. In particular, students have to be able to:
    - calculate the properties of both single-component pure substances as well as moist air;
    - solve mass and energy balances;
    - solve heat transfer problems.

    Prerequisites

    Elements of Physics and Mathematics

    Teaching methods

    The course consists of 48 hours of frontal lessons, including 13 hours of written exercises.
    Attending the lessons is mandatory. At least 70% of lessons have to be attended in order to participate to the examination session. The participation of students to the lessons will be registered at the beginning of the lessons by signing a document supplied by the professor.

    Evaluation methods

    During the course two classroom tests, with a duration of 1,5 hours each, are scheduled. Each test will include 4 numerical problems focusing on thermodynamics and heat transfer.
    The results of the tests will be expressed in thirtieths; the overall score will be calculated as the arithmetic mean of the results of both written tests. Only the students obtaining a score greater than 18/30 will pass the exam without sustaining additional written/oral part.

    The final exam will consist of a written as well as an oral part. For the written part (duration of 2,5 hours), the student has to solve 6 numerical problems. The score of the written test will be expressed in thirtieths; only the students obtaining a score greater than 18/30 will be admitted to the oral part.
    In the oral part, the student must demonstrate his theoretical knowledge of the subjects and must connect the different aspects. The score of the oral part will be expressed in thirtieths. The overall score will be calculated as the arithmetic mean of the results of both written and oral parts. Only the students obtaining an overall score greater than 18/30 will pass the exam.

    During the written tests, students are allowed to use tables and graphs supplied by the professor as well as the calculator, while using PCs, smart phones, tablets, etc. is not allowed.
