Ciro Natale received the Laurea degree (Magna cum Laude) in Electronic Engineering and the Research Doctorate degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Naples Federico II in July 1995 and February 2000, respectively. His Laurea thesis was awarded the UCIMU 1996 prize as the best Italian thesis in the sector “Robot: design and applications”. His Doctorate thesis was selected as a finalist at the First Euron PhD Award. From October 1998 to April 1999 he was Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics of the DLR, Germany. From July 2000 to January 2005 Ciro Natale has been a Researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the Second University of Naples, where until November 2017 he held the position of Associate Professor in the scientific sector ING-INF/04 – Automatica and since December 2017 he is Full Professor. He is responsible for the Robotics Laboratory. His main research interests are robotic manipulation based on tactile sensing, nonlinear control of mechanical systems, identification and robust active control of vibrating structures, modelling and control of systems with hysteresis. He has been the Principal Investigator for the University of Campania in many European research projects in the area of Aeronautics and of ICT - Cognitive Systems and Robotics: ECHORD, SAPHARI, LOCOMACHS, EUROC, LABOR, and of two national research projects ROCOCO' and STEPFAR. From 2009 to 2015 he served as Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Control Systems Technology, from 2015 to 2017 he was Associate Editor of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters and since 2017 he is Associate Editor of Automatica. He is the Editor of the Section "Control" of the Springer Encyclopedia of Robotics. Ciro Natale published more than 130 papers in international journals and conference proceedings, he is the author of the book "Interaction Control of Robot Manipulators" (Springer) and co-author of the book "Active Control of Flexible Structures" (Springer). Alberto Cavallo is currently a Full Professor of Automatic Control at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli”. His research interests deal with many aspects of the Theory of Automatic Control, including robust control techniques with aeronautic and aerospace applications, with parametric and uncertainties and H-2 and H-inf indices, high-order sliding manifold control, active control of sound and vibrations, modelling and control of smart actuators with hysteresis, and currently is working on energy management and supervisory control for More Electric Aircraft applications. He has published more than 120 journal and conference papers, and two books, one published by Springer and the other by Prentice Hall. Giuseppe De Maria has been full professor of System Theory and Automatic Control at the Università degli Studi della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli since 1994 to 2019, when he retired. He has been Director of the Department of Information Engineering of Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli for ten years. His research interests include control of aerospace and aeronautical systems, active noise and vibration control of flexible structures, robust control, control of mechanical systems, industrial and advanced robotics. Now, his research interests are focused on the development of force and tactile sensors for grasping and in-hand manipulation in professional service robotics. Salvatore Pirozzi is currently an Associate Professor with the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Italy. His research interests include modeling and control of smart actuators for active noise and vibration control, design and modeling of innovative sensors, in particular of tactile solutions for robotic systems, as well as interpretation and fusion of data acquired from the developed sensors. On these topics, he has authored or co-authored more than 80 international journal and conference papers. He participated in many European and National research projects and in particular he has been Principal Investigator for the University of Campania for the FP7 WIRES Project and he is currently Principal Investigator for the H2020 REMODEL Project. His recent activities in these projects concern the use of tactile sensors for grasping and shape recognition of Deformable Linear Objects, by obtaining the Best Paper Award @AIM Conference in 2017 and the Best New Application Paper Award of the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (T-ASE) in 2020. He is currently an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology and Section Board Member for the MDPI Sensors journal. Marco Costanzo obtained the Bachelor’s Degree cum laude in Computer and Electronic Engineering, the Master’s Degree cum laude in Computer Engineering (curriculum Robotics and Automation), and the Ph.D. in Industrial and Computer Engineering at Università degli Studi della Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, in November 2015, July 2017, and January 2021, respectively. Between May ad August 2019 he was Visiting Research Student, at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IAI) at University of Bremen (UniHB), Bremen, Germany. In September 2020 he won the prize IEEE RAS Italian Chapter “Fabrizio Flacco” Young Author Best Paper Award 2020. In July 2023 he won the Mechatronics Paper Prize. From December 2020 to December 2021 he was Research Fellow at Università degli Studi della Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, where he currently holds a researcher position. From December 2023 he is Coordinator of the PRIN PNRR project "Dexterous Assistive Robots for improved human healthCare" (DARC). His main research interests concern in-hand robotic manipulation using tactile sensors, visual control, and safe human-robot interaction.
